5 ways to be a mealtime hero (sandwich)

Sandwiches are always popular — after all, they’re portable, easy to assemble and (let’s be honest) who doesn’t love bread? That’s why we’ve taken a fresh approach to some of our fan-favourite recipes and turned them into luscious sandwiches that eat like a meal. These five possibilities are seriously delicious, but they’re just a starting point to get your creative juices flowing.
Leftovers made over
Riffing on leftovers is way more fun than just serving up the same meal all over again. That’s why we heartily encourage you to transform the extras from last night’s dinner into a mouth-watering sub with all the fixings. You might even want to cook extra one night to be sure you have plenty of fillings for the next day’s lunch or evening meal.
Start with a Petite Baguette, load it up and then cut it into two or three sandwich-size portions. On our current rotation: slices of warm Supreme Homestyle Meatloaf slathered with tangy-sweet Original BBQ Sauce and topped with baby arugula and sliced cuke. We also love sliced Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breasts topped with creamy Swiss, crunchy romaine and a generous smear of Garlic Aioli Spread.
Prepping for a potluck or picnic? Make a few subs and cut crosswise into smaller, narrower portions and serve up a variety so everyone can try a few different fillings.
Go big or go home
Hearty appetites call for supersized sammies that don’t skimp on the add-ins. Stock up on your most-wanted veggie toppings and consider tucking the usual sides (like fries) in with the filling to take these shareable meals to the next level.
First up, cut a warm Petite Baguette horizontally but not quite all the way through. Spoon in juicy, tender Gourmet Meatballs in Tomato Sauce and top with a sprinkle of shredded mozzarella for maximum cheesy goodness. Next, grab a fluffy Greek-style pita and wrap up a grilled Marinated Pork Souvlaki Kabob — sold individually so you can make one or as many as you like — with a pile of crispy, golden Shoestring Fries, shredded lettuce, sliced red onion and a drizzle of cool tzatziki.
Play (with) chicken
Breaded chicken will never steer you wrong as a sandwich filler. Heat up any of our fully cooked, juicy chicken breast options — Original, Grills, Crispy Breaded or Spicy Breaded — and stuff them into our fluffy Gourmet Buns (toasted for ultimate deliciousness). The toppings are up to you, but we recommend being lavish with the mayo or our Buttermilk Dill Dipping Sauce and crowning your creation with crunchy shredded lettuce or coleslaw. And don’t forget the pickles!
Kick up the spice quotient by swapping in Chipotle Mayo Spread instead of plain mayo, and adding a layer of pickled banana peppers or peperoncini to your sandwich.
For the gluten-free crowd
If you’re eating gluten-free, we see you — and we have plenty of options that make sandwiches worry-free and incredibly delicious. Our go-to is a simple chicken hero: Start with a gluten-free soft bun from your favourite bakery section and fill it up with our Country-Style Chicken Breasts, which are enveloped in a divinely crispy gluten-free coating. Top them with a tangy vinaigrette-style slaw (try it with red cabbage instead of green for a pretty hit of colour), a leaf of tender butter lettuce and a drizzle of our Garlic Aioli Spread.
We also love a classic fish sandwich with all the trimmings. Place our Seasoned Breaded Cod in a gluten-free crusty bun and dress it up with shredded iceberg lettuce and a helping of Buttermilk Dill Dipping Sauce or Tartar Sauce. Add a pickle spear and some crunchy veggie sticks alongside for a simple, pleasing lunch or dinner.
For parties and laid-back family eating, we love a riff on everyone’s favourite charcuterie-and-cheese boards. Piling one high with meaty sandwich fillings, fixings and condiments means everyone at the table can build a their own masterpiece as high and as decadent as they like.
Grab a large cutting board, tray or baking sheet and arrange rows of hot, saucy, meaty mains, such as succulent Pulled Pork, savoury Slow Cooked Beef Pot Roast and tender Philly Beef Steak. Tuck in sliced Swiss or cheddar; lettuce leaves, sliced tomato and red onion; and all the condiments, from spicy horseradish sauce to grainy Dijon to smoky BBQ sauce. Pass halved Petite Baguette pieces at the table and encourage everyone to show off their mouth-watering creations before they devour them.
